The University of Chicago MRSEC cosponsored a workshop on "Inelastic Scattering Probes of Condensed Matter," held at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory May thirteenth through the fifteenth. Argonne National Laborato ry, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory also sponsored the event. This meetin g brought together experts who use light, X-rays, atomic beams, electrons, and neutrons to probe the dynamical structure factors of solids and liquids. The talks covered the range of scattering techniques in a general fashion so as to be interesting to participants specializing in the other techniques. Special emphasis was given to the interaction of current (and future) developments in techniques and new problems in condensed matter physics. The conference aimed to familiarize people with new oppor tunities afforded by other techniques, enabling them to broaden their range of collaborations and understanding when working on common physics problems. The recent commissioning of the APS at Argonne, the projected capital investments to revitalize US neutron scattering, and advances in the technology of small laboratory scattering experiments make such a meeting a very timely event.
