S3 (Sight and Sounds of Science) Project

Call for Entries!
What new dimensions are opened up for science if the scientific approach includes vocabulary drawn from music or the visual arts? Where does science turn into art? Where does art enter science? What untapped potential for artistic expression is lurking in the output of cutting edge science?

To provoke discussion and to explore a dialog between the arts and sciences, the Chicago Materials Research Center is initiating the S3 Project: Sounds and Sights of Science. The goal is to take a fresh look at the interface between science and art, to map out creative connections between the two. The S3 Project focuses on areas of scientific inquiry and artistic expression that rarely have been brought together, yet whose final “products” are a significant part of daily life: we seek connections between materials research on the one side, and music and video/animation on the other.

The Chicago Materials Research Center is now inviting the University community to participate in the S3 Project by submitting an original short video, film, animations, music compositions or sound collages that have either the science or the scientific environment as their subject matter.

We solicit entries in two categories. Anyone associated with the University of Chicago community is eligible for this competition. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be submitted by a participant. Entries may be submitted electronically as email attachments or by sending a DVD or memory stick, etc., to the address listed on the entry form. To be eligible for one of the prizes, entries must be received on or before February 13 , 2012. Each entry must be accompanied by a signed entry form. The S3 Project panel of faculty jurors will convene to choose up to three prize-winning entries from the following two categories:

• Sights of Science (film, video, animation; with or without sound track)
•Sounds of Science (recorded sounds, musical compositions, sound collages, electronic or acoustic)

Entries may not exceed 5 minutes.A panel of faculty jurors will consider selection criteria that include the following:

• artistic and/or scientific merit
• degree to which the entry provides a new perspective on either science or art
• success in translating between artistic and scientific vocabularies (for example, translating specific scientific results into visual or aural experiences with artistic content)
• originality of approach

Prizes! In each category there will be a: First Prize ($500), Second Prize ($250), and Honorable Mention ($100). Decisions will be announced before April 15, 2012. All decisions of the panel are final.

The Chicago Materials Research Center will have a selection of the entries, including the winning entries, on view at a campus location to be announced. Participants will be asked to allow the Chicago Materials Research Center, in conjunction with other campus groups, to select and showcase entries on University websites or publications (this may include the use of “trailers” or abridged form).
