Educational Outreach
The S3 Project
Details and Rules
Eligible participants include the following individuals associated with the University of Chicago: faculty, students, staff, spouses, and alumni. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be submitted by a participant. Entries may be submitted electronically as email attachments, or sent to the Materials Research Center on zip disks, CDs, audio cassettes, or video cassettes (VHS or S-VHS). While electronic (i.e., non-tape) entries can be accepted in a variety of file formats, we urge participants to submit their entries in one of the standard, web-compatible formats that could be opened with a web browser or with other standard programs on Windows or Mac machines; failure to do so may make it impossible to consider your entry. To participate in the competition for one of the prizes, entries must be received on or before January 15, 2007, 4pm. All entries must be accompanied by a signed entry form. The deadline for receipt of this form is also January 15, 2007, 4pm.
The S3 Project Committee will convene soon thereafter, and will choose prize-winning entries in each of the following categories:
- Sounds of Science (recorded sounds, sound collages, musical compositions)
*** New category for this year's competition: recordings of the spoken word (e.g. poetry or short stories on materials science)***
- Sights of Science (film, video, animation; with or without sound track)
In each category the prizes will be: First Prize ($300), Second Prize ($200), and Third Prize ($100). The committee will consider selection criteria that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- artistic and/or scientific merit
- degree to which the entry puts a new perspective on either science or art
- success in translating between artistic and scientific vocabularies (for example, translating specific scientific results into visual or aural experiences with artistic content)
- creativity of approach.
The committee may decide not to award all possible prizes. All decisions of the committee are final. Decisions will be announced before the end of the school year.
The Chicago Materials Research Center plans to have an S3 Project Evening where a selection of the entries, including the winning entries will be shown at a campus location . This event will also include a panel discussion with members of the S3 Project Committee which will be announced to the Public.
The copyright for any particular entry stays with the participant who submitted that entry. However, by submitting an entry, participants agree to allow the Chicago Materials Research Center, in conjunction with other campus groups, to select and showcase entries during the S3 Project Evening. Furthermore, participants agree to allow the Materials Research Center to use "trailers" made from the entries on the Center website in Center publications (such as reports), and in Center presentations. For the purpose of the S3 Project, "trailers" are defined as abridged, lower resolution or otherwise altered versions of the original entries edited to retain the flavor of the original but having a reduced running time and smaller overall file size. Typical trailers will be no longer than about 20-30 seconds. Trailers can be submitted by the participants together with the full piece, or the Center will arrange for them to be made (in consultation with the person holding the copyright).
Deadlines: Entries must be received on or before January 15, 2007, 4 p.m. The deadline for receipt of the entry form is also January 15, 2007, 4 p.m.
