Materials
- Assorted fruit
- 5g dish soap
- 2g salt
- 100ml water
- 100ml isopropyl alcohol (ice cold from freezer)
- Hot water (about 60 degrees)
- Sieve or coffee filter paper
- 2 glass beakers
- Several mixing bowls
- Paperclip
Students mash up fruit, use soap and salt as an extraction buffer, and filter mixture through a sieve or filter paper to remove solid material. They then use isopropyl alcohol to separate DNA from the rest of the mixture.
