DNA Extraction

Materials

  1. Assorted fruit
  2. 5g dish soap
  3. 2g salt
  4. 100ml water
  5. 100ml isopropyl alcohol (ice cold from freezer)
  6. Hot water (about 60 degrees)
  7. Sieve or coffee filter paper
  8. 2 glass beakers
  9. Several mixing bowls
  10. Paperclip

Students mash up fruit, use soap and salt as an extraction buffer, and filter mixture through a sieve or filter paper to remove solid material. They then use isopropyl alcohol to separate DNA from the rest of the mixture.
